When it no longer works: a rule of thumb for trying something new

In 2020, I wrote the first draft of my novel—from which my upcoming Sweetwater series derives—at the end of my work days. In 2021, I shifted #allthings writing related to the hours between 6:30 and 8 a.m., with exercise later in the day to allow more time for prayer and purpose (aka writing) before my day job. And for quite a while, I maintained a consistent morning “ritual.” But as I prepared my blank canvas (see December email) for 2022, I realized this schedule once again seemed ill-fitting. I wish I could say I’ve found the solution. However, until I discover that “perfect fit,” my plan to approach each day with focus—or intention—brings me to a question I ask myself often: How long am I willing try something before deciding it no longer works? A good rule of thumb: a new week, month—year—is always the write time to try something new.

How long until you decide it’s time to try something new?
