When the going gets tough: committing to the life you want
Recently I stumbled across a quote that struck a nerve in one of those classic “truth hurts” moments. Simply stated, the struggles we encounter serve as tests to see if we’re committed to the lives we say we want. At that moment, I realized I’d been silently casting blame on others and/or my circumstances for my challenges, rather than acknowledge the apathy that had caused me to take my blessings for granted—from the forest retreat where my husband and I have lived since 2022, to my health and well-being, to the ability to write full-time and escape for a hike whenever the urge strikes, to my family, friends and community. So when it came time to prepare my “envision” board for the new year, and I recognized that most of my 2023 dreams had materialized—through divine intervention and plenty of elbow grease—I made a vow going forward: When the going gets tough, I’ll just get tougher.
