A funny thing happened on my way to 60: learning how to love myself

No, I haven’t turned 60, yet. But a few months ago, I blogged about intentional acts of kindness, and my plans to prepare for a milestone birthday and brand-new decade at the end of 2025. So far this year, it’s included activities such as donating to Goodwill, writing a note of encouragement to an acquaintance undergoing cancer treatment, gifting a Starbucks “hug in a mug” to a family member going through a hard time, and more. When I first set out to complete 60 deeds in 12 months, I worried it might be too hard to accomplish. But it’s proven a lot easier when I give in ways that I would appreciate, but also when I extend some of that love back to me in tangible ways—for example, by scheduling appointments for preventive health screenings, replacing an unhealthy habit with a wholesome one, and giving myself grace. So on Valentine’s Day, consider this a reminder to show yourself some love, too.

How well do you love yourself?
