Playing it safe: making excuses or missing out?

As my feet inched closer to the edge of a recent and long-overdue leap, I looked down: no net. A vivid reminder of that morning when, as a young girl, I ascended the rungs of the tallest ladder at the public pool. Knees knocking, I shuffled across the diving board until I faced the vast sky above and body of water below. More than once, however, I nudged past the snickers and finger pointing to climb back down to safety. Today, decades later and devoid of mockers, a lack of net can taunt me just the same. But then what might I miss if I tuck tail and retreat? Before my recent leap, that question prompted me to list a dozen instances where God has shown up to provide a way—a safety net—over the years. My husband asks: “Do you wish you’d jumped that day?” Maybe. But what I wish for even more was that I’d had the courage to fly.

Do you play it safe?
