The in-between space: how to bridge the gap
Prior to the final move to our wooded property in Northern Arizona—both vehicles loaded down with last-minute household items, clothes and the contents of our fridge and freezer—my husband and I spent a week wrapping up loose ends in the Southwest Valley. It proved an ongoing challenge to stay present when half of our belongings already waited in the mountains. We each struggled with having one foot in our old lives and one in the new; practicing patience was hard! But during our initial move, when we packed up the U-Haul and stayed a few nights at the cabin, we learned that routine is elemental: something as simple as morning pages with coffee, time in prayer and devotions, afternoon walks and yoga and a nightcap of tea. Sticking to regular activities helped combat the strangeness, the doubts and the “Oh my gosh, what did we just do?” For us, routine helped bridge the gap to ground us in those in-between spaces.
