I have no idea what I’m doing: but I’m having a blast

Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come…You don’t give up. ~ Anne Lamott

A few weeks ago, I listened to an interview in which Sarah Werner, host of The Write Now podcast, spoke with one of my literary idols: Anne Lamott. In the hour-long discussion, Lamott talked about resilience — not just as a creator — but as a human being. While I jotted down key points she shared, one in particular struck within me a deeper chord: Agree that you don’t know what you’re doing. What a simple, yet practical piece of advice that negates the need to pretend we’ve got it all together — a liberating concept. But I suggest taking it one step further: While trying to figure it out: Have fun. Laugh at yourself. And realize each of us is doing the best we can with what we have.

Do you pretend — or defend — that you’ve figured it out?
