Rerouting course: weighing the options
Earlier this year, my husband booked a weeklong summer trip for two at a cabin nestled in the Northern Arizona mountains. With a forest preserve just yards from our front porch, we intended to take advantage of the cooler temperatures by hiking as much as possible. However, with the wild fires raging across the state — and the driest season the owner of the ranch could ever remember — it came as no surprise when the forest service issued a closure for the rec areas adjacent to our little retreat in the woods. This change in plans necessitated revisiting, plus weighing, our options: 1) Cancel or postpone our reservations (and potentially incur cancelation/change fees); 2) choose something else to do that week or 3) maintain our original destination — all three of which would require reframing our expectations, with the possibility of a complete course correction. What ultimately took place, you ask? Stay tuned for the update!
Do you prefer sticking to the plan, or making it up as you go?
