Let in the light: combating darkness

Ever notice how—when darkness draws near—doubts creep in? Yet, in the light of day, with the sun streaming through the windows, worries and unfounded fears fade away. This has been my experience for years, so I purpose to wait until morning to make big decisions. Scripture says that sorrow may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning. I’ve walked out this truth many times over—believing it holds merit no matter our situation. Joy in a sunrise; joy in a spring rain; joy for another breath in our lungs; joy for a chance to make a difference. As my husband and I settle into our new surroundings, I’m learning a lot of lessons in this season of change. The biggest thus far: our attitudes dictate how we perceive our circumstances. We choose whether to walk in darkness (aka negativity), or throw open the floodgates to usher in the light. As for me and my household, we choose joy.

How do you combat darkness?

That’s a gorgeous view, Chris. In terms of how I combat darkness, I consciously choose to focus on the positives, especially when going through a challenging time. Doing this – or reflecting on what I am grateful for – has helped me get through some very difficult days.

You are so fortunate to have a husband who focuses on the light and joy. Being in a relationship with a husband who struggles with severe depression and can only see the darkness and negativity most days is incredibly challenging.

I do love the view, Ann. But I still struggle with the darkness, which I think will always be there on this side of heaven. And even though we choose joy, it’s (most) oftentimes after we’ve wrestled with the doubts and negativity and finally made the decision to look at the bright side. Lifting you and your family up in prayer to usher in better days ahead, filled with gratitude.
