Take ‘em or leave ‘em: managing deadlines and schedules
I’m all about deadlines and, consequently, schedules. While many of my deadlines are self-imposed, a few of my writing and/or editing projects are geared around due dates set by the publisher and/or client. Since transitioning to self-employment, I’ve found it a challenge to create a daily set schedule that not only encompasses these projects, but also makes room for new activities I’ve added to my calendar—such as music ministry, volunteer opportunities and women’s Bible study. So instead of working around the traditional 8-5 agenda, I’ve been experimenting with more of a day-to-day approach. Especially because I’m also working with the temperamental mountain forecast. Which means if I want to squeeze in a hike before it rains, I might just need to don my trail shoes earlier rather than later or vice versa. And by arranging my days with plenty of time allotted for each project and/or activity, it provides a skeleton, of sorts, to help me stay on track.
