Sharing the load: tips to combat discouragement
I recently attended a webinar presented by another author entitled “Encouragement for Writers.” Not only did I walk away equipped with tools to combat discouragement in my creative practice, but I also received validation through the collective stories shared by other writers that I’m not alone. But I also believe the takeaways expressed by the facilitator are applicable for anyone who struggles with discouragement because—like grief or fear or anxiety—discouragement is not a respecter of persons. In fact, I used to believe it was a sign of weakness or lack of faith for me to admit I battled discouragement. Instead, it’s actually a healthy practice to communicate these feelings. I also discovered that taking a step back from the object of our discouragement can invite much-needed breakthrough. And finally, when we’re able to be a voice of hope to a friend in a similar situation, it never ceases to amaze me how our own troubles appear to shrink in comparison.
What’s one way you combat discouragement?
