Life as a training ground: learning lessons the hard way

About an hour into a weekly trek in the mountains that can take me anywhere from 77-90 minutes, my ankle buckled and I broke my fall — and my wrist — with a large rock near the trail’s edge. Although my injury involved surgery, complete with the “premium steel plate and pins package,” the experience also served as my personal training ground. First, hiking alone works when others know your route and you’re familiar with the area, but not so much if you break something and your shoe comes untied. Second, rather than put my writing ambitions on the back burner, I’m discovering other creative — albeit time-consuming — ways to keep doing what I love, aka #dictationforthewin. And third, sometimes life circumstances serve as a catalyst to slow us down, which means we must toss an extra helping of grace our own way. Because it’s easy to throw a pity party, but a lot more fun to be the life of the party.

What lesson have you learned the hard way?
