Daily wins: cheering for the can do’s
Two weeks ago, I started physical therapy to recover the use my left arm following surgery. It’s amazing how much I had taken for granted the use of two hands. Even more remarkable to me, however, was the discovery that the daily “wins” — however small — embolden me to do the hard work required to regain mobility and strength. Even when it hurts. While the PT group I spend time with serves as accountability buddies, we also cheer each other on. “I tied my shoes,” I smile. “I buttoned my shirt,” exclaims a woman. A man stands next to me lifting one pound weights and I almost blurt out for fun, “Show off!” but choose not to interrupt his concentration. Each of these examples represent baby steps. Progress. Yes, I still need regular naps (healing is exhausting!), but I also recognize the importance of focusing on what I can vs. cannot do. And being a cheerleader who roots for others along the way.
Who/what can you cheer for today?

I cheer for my sweetheart Mary who flipped her wheelchair accidentally off the front sidewalk where she lives. She broke her arm, dislocated her shoulder, bruised her ribs and face and she layed there under her wheelchair for 45 minutes before help arrived. Then she was carted off to the hospital cracking jokes and taking the pain in stride. Now she wants to take people to court. GO MARY!
Oh my goodness, poor Mary! May we all find glimmers of humor when life throws us a curveball.
