In search of a linear life: a lesson in futility

In a quick text to my daughter shortly after my husband, Bob’s hip replacement surgery (see “Delayed gratification”), I shared a bit of discouragement and she reminded me that—as frustrating as it can be—the process of healing isn’t linear. First, when did she become so wise? And second, I’m all about celebrating life’s victories, both large and small. Except I’d forgotten this timely lesson in my futile attempt to measure consistent progress during Bob’s rehabilitation. Yet, the reality is that we can experience setbacks, “off” days, and days when one step forward feels like two steps back in any area of our lives. Life doesn’t always make sense, and none of us possess a secret set of directions that instruct us what to do or where to go. But as believers, we’re not alone. We just need to remind ourselves to trust in the Lord, and He will direct our paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6).

What area in your life seems to be less linear than the rest?
